STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:
How to use FTP to upload to this web site:

If you've never used FTP before, don't worry, it's really easy!

STEP 1

Skip directly to step 2 if this is your second time around.
First you will need an FTP program.  I recommend a program called WS_FTP.  It's small, it's free, and you can download it right here. Click on 'OPEN', in the window that pops up after you click here to download WS_FTP.  The program will begin downloading to your computer.  When the download completes, the install process will begin automatically.  If the install process does not begin automatically, you probably clicked 'SAVE' instead of 'OPEN', when the window popped up.  You'll need to go back to the start of step 1, and read the instructions again.  During the installation process, you will be asked what you intend to use the program for.  Say that you're a student using the program at home for personal use.

STEP 2
After the program is installed, you need to start it from the START menu on your computer.
(You will find the program under STARTPROGRAMS, WS_FTP, WS_FTP95LE.)
The icon will look like this one:

STEP 3
When you start the program, it will give you a window that looks like this:
Fill it out just like you see here, except put in your own name where it says '- your first name here -'.
NEXT, click on the 'Startup' tab.

STEP 4
After you click on the 'Startup' tab, you'll see this:
Type in uploadweb in lower case letters just like you see here.
NEXT, click on the 'Advanced' tab.

STEP 5
After you click on the 'Advanced' tab, you'll see this:
UNCHECK the box that says 'Passive Transfers'
NEXT, click on OK.

STEP 6
You're mostly done.

After you click on OK, the computer will play a train sound to let you know that YOU'RE CONNECTED!!
You'll see a window like this one:
The panel on the left shows you the files on YOUR computer (Local).  The panel on the right shows you files on the WEB SITE (remote).

STEP 7
You may not recognize the files in the left panel even though they're on your computer.  That's OK.  Just double-click on the symbol in the left panel a few times, and you will be looking at the your local C drive, exactly as if you had clicked on 'My Computer', and then 'Local Disk (C:)'.  Uploading a file (or files) is just a simple process of finding and selecting the files (or even entire folders) in the left panel, and uploading them, to the right panel (which represents the web site) by pressing this button:

If you can't find the files you want to upload, see 'PITFALLS' below.

STEP 8

After you begin the transfer, just wait for the files to upload and you're done!!  The amount of time it will take will vary depending on the speed of your internet connection and the size of the file, files and/or folders you are uploading.  You can safely use your computer while this transfer takes place. Your files will be available immediately from anywhere in the world at www.fifefamily.net/download

YOU'RE DONE!

SOME POSSIBLE PITFALLS:
If you are trying to upload files that are on your Desktop or in your 'My Documents' or 'My Pictures' folder, you may find it difficult to find them in the left panel of the FTP program.  This is because Windows 'buries' these folders within a jumble of other system files and folders.  An easy workaround to this problem is to make a folder on your 'Local Disk (C:)' called 'upload'.   This folder can be used as a temporary holding area for the files you want to upload.  You can simply use windows to copy the files you wish to upload into this folder where you can easily find them.

WORTH REPEATING:
Remember, you can upload multiple files or even multiple folders.  To select multiple files (and/or folders), just hold down the 'CTRL' key while you're clicking on the files you want to upload.  Doing so allows you to highlight more than one.  The FTP program will upload them all in one step.

PART TWO:
How do I make my own folder on the server?
You can create your own folder or folders on the server (recommended) so that your things stay separate from everyone else's.

HERE'S HOW:
When you are connected,
you will see the screen that looks like this one:

To make your folder, simply click on the MkDir button on the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the screen which looks like this:.

IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY click on the one on the left hand side of the screen, you'll just make a new folder on your own computer.

Enter the name of the of your folder (Please name the folder after yourself) Then press OK.

Now you will see your folder on the right hand panel!  Double click on your new folder to open it.  Ready for upload!
